Field Studies
In Field Study class we wrapped up our Astronomy unit this past week with a Celebration of Knowledge (Unit Test)! Most of the students did well and they are getting their tests back today so they can share the results when they get home. We have also spent some time following the Artemis II space voyage this week. The students were very curious and excited about the expedition. On Friday we will begin our new and final unit on our Farming and our Food System. This is part of our place-based curriculum where we learn more about this local industry and how we are connected to the Earth every day through the food we eat.
PE/Health Class
In P.E. class we got the baseball gloves and bats out this week. It is feeling like spring as we learn about and enjoy the great American pastime.
Update from Mr. Sump
Blue Bay
In Humanities, Blue Bay students have moved onto studying the ancient Persian Empire. The vocabulary words from this week are English words that all originate from ancient Persia. Students are also working on memorizing the countries of North and Central America as we continue our World Geography mega-unit. Both the spelling test and the geography quiz will be on Friday this week. The school gave an overview of the end of year field trip to both students and parents of the upper grade classroom, so everyone is getting excited for our May 4th-8th trip, which is Outdoor School at Camp Hancock!
In Math, Blue Bay students are working on a variety of topics. 4th graders are learning to classify triangles, and using their knowledge of angles and lines to construct different types of shapes. 5th graders are working on multiple digit long division, and 6th graders just wrapped up a unit on analog long division and analog multiplication of decimal numbers. 7th graders are working on operations with negative and positive integers, and I introduced our 8th grade student to the Pythagorean Theorem! He is continuing his work in Pre-Algebra.
During Buddy Time, the mentor/mentee pairs did an activity in the forest called “Meet a Tree.” One partner is blindfolded and led to a tree by their buddy. The blindfolded student feels the tree up and down, and then is led back to the start location. After the blindfold is removed, the student attempts to find their tree. After locating the tree they “met,” they can extend the learning by identifying the tree using an ID resource. This activity allows students to build trust with their buddy, develop communication skills, as well as grow their relationship with the natural world.
Update from Ms. Kassie
Rose Hips
- Remember to share this blog with your students. They love looking at the pictures and seeing what teachers are sharing!
- In our story time we started a unit to celebrate you and me understanding what makes us who we are. Students are working on thinking about what makes them special and how they are similar and different.
- I sent a parent check-in yesterday via email. Please take a few minutes to let me know how this year is going. Thank you!
Math: We are regrouping one to make a new ten with 2 digit number using different strategies- Jump to the next ten (25+7= 25+5+2= 30+2= 32), Add 10s and 1s, (25+7= 20+5+7= 20+12=32), using 100s charts and drawing pictures.
Literacy: We are reading and spelling 2 syllable words with VCE (vowel, consonant, e) Examples- cupcake, lifetime, polite, volume
Games to try at home:
- Math- See if students can say how many to get to the next 10 and what that 10 is starting at any number. (Examples- 36 needs 4 more to get to 40 or 143 needs 7 more to get to 150)
- Literacy- Look for 2 syllable vce spellings in books.
Rose Hip & Green Ridge Science
We are switching our focus to states of matter in our material magic unit. Students are learning about solids, liquids and gases by thinking about when objects change their state of matter and why. Ask them how a crayon is like ice. (It has something to do with the power of undo!)
Update from Mr. B
Green Ridge
Green Ridge Math: Students are editing away on their first 100-word narrative (an experience that showed something important about family) and working through the r-controlled vowel phoneme /er/ in all its spelling variations.
Green Ridge Literacy: Students are finishing up the first of many multiplication chapters (understanding the meaning of multiplication). We have spent the past week establishing symbol X means ‘groups of’ and a problem such as 9 X 3 refers to 9 groups of 3.
Rose Hip & Green Ridge Creative Movement w/ Mr. B: Students were introduced to low, middle and high levels of space. They moved within these levels with musical commands and began to define words (wiggle, jiggle, wriggle) through the use of their body in all levels of space at varying tempos.
