The Black Butte School Bond Project is well under way with a lot happening behind the scenes.
Jonah Jensen, Principal Architect, at SAJ Architecture has been leading bi-monthly Owner-Architect-Contractor (OAC) meetings since October with his SAJ team (including Lee Georgton and Ellie Escobar) and BBS staff members Simon Levear, Delaney Sharp, Kassie DeMarsh, and Molly Schultz.
These design meetings have included discussions on the needs of the school, students and teachers. SAJ has been asking BBS questions about the desired functionality of each teaching space, considering creative design improvements, weather aspects of construction, how to best utilize existing square footage, planning for safety & security, and how to best preserve the character and history of our school while building for both now and the future of BBS.
These conversations have been exciting and full of creative ideas! A HUGE thank you to Lake Creek Lodge for generously sharing their space for many of these meetings!
October 2023
Local Geotechnical Engineer, Wallace Group from Bend, Oregon, performed testing to investigate subsurface soil conditions to determine the physical properties of earth materials. This information is necessary and valuable for both the architect and structural engineer for use in the design process for the proposed addition.
November 2023
Pacific 3D Reality Capture provided scanning services for the Black Butte School District Bond Project. A 3D laser scanner uses light detection and ranging to measure and record precise locations and distances. This technology provides comprehensive as-built digital images which the architect uses in the design process producing 3D drawings which aids in design decisions and provides greater accuracy for bid documents which produces improved bid results.

Jonah led a design meeting at Lake Creek Lodge with engineering consultants for structural, civil, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical. The design team is working on the schematic design phase which aims to create comprehensive single-line plan and section drawings, present a complete building layout, and furnish detailed narratives outlining the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems.

Griffin Construction joined their first OAC meeting with SAJ and BBSD for the Construction Manager|General Contractor (CMGC) kickoff. Griffin will provide a valuable service during the preconstruction phase of the project. Throughout the design phases, Griffin will conduct a thorough review of the design and offer valuable recommendations to the Project Team. These recommendations will cover aspects such as constructability, material availability, procurement timelines, construction scheduling, and cost estimates.
