Hello Families,

Thanks to BBS Board Member Jenni Green for organizing and setting up a small food pantry in the front entrance of the school. This vestibule remains unlocked 24/7 and anyone in need of this resource is welcome to take what they need. Donations will also be accepted and we hope to keep the food pantry stocked through the holidays. More details coming soon!

Here is a message from Ms. Kassie about Stone Soup:

Next Friday students will continue the BBS tradition of a special stone soup lunch, where we all work to make and enjoy a delicious meal.  The story of Stone Soup is based around the magic of people coming together to share the little they have to make a delicious meal. In the tradition, we invite you to send something to contribute to the meal that you have already at your house.  We would love to start receiving contributions to soup on Monday the 17th.

Items for stone soup:
Veggies (carrots, onions, celery, potatoes, garlic, kale…)
Cans of crushed tomatoes
Cans of coconut cream
Nutritional yeast

We will be having apples with cinnamon for a sweet treat after, so feel free to contribute to apples if you wish.

Read on for news and updates.

Update from Mr. Sump

Blue Bay

In Humanities, Blue Bay students are beginning their unit on Ancient Egypt. So far this week, their vocabulary/spelling words come from this topic, and they have been ‘exploring’ the environment of Egypt. They read a chapter from their History textbooks, took notes, got a lesson from their teacher, watched a national geographic video about Ancient Egyptian culture, and did a short writing assignment.

In Math this week we have been doing a whole group review of the fundamentals of fractions. Today students did a hands-on activity in which they used edible manipulatives (pack of mini gummy bears) to understand addition and subtraction of fractions, including finding a common denominator and simplifying answers. Tomorrow they will break into small groups and continue working on fraction concepts at their level, whether that be using fractions as division, multiplying fractions, or sticking with addition and subtraction.

Rose Hips

We started a new story unit about weather. Ask students what a meteorologist is and why they went outside in their slippers today.

In literacy we are doing more digraph work with ch and wh. In math we are working on adding 3 numbers together.

Games and activities to try at home

  • Math: I suggested the game “war” with cards to some of you over conferences. Try playing where students add 2, 3 or even 4 cards together.
  • Literacy: Look for all the digraphs we have learned thus far around you- sh, th, ch, and wh.
Rose Hip & Green Ridge Science

We started a new unit about art and how it can celebrate, inspire, and create action in our community. We started with an art immersion project today about the color brown (see photos below). Ask them why brown is beautiful.

Update from Mr. B

Green Ridge

As Green Ridge students traverse the landform known as Noschoolnovember they are focusing on what they can revise and better ways to showcase their learning in both subjects. Much of the work scheduled for this week and next will be an attempt to ‘tidy up’ any loose ends before Thanksgiving week. Expect to see a few additional reading materials, a test or two, and work from both math and literacy needing a second or third try in purple folders (starting Thursday).

Field Studies

The students were off school for 5 days this past weekend. Hopefully that gave them enough time to finish their Halloween candy and get ready for the next Holiday. We spent two of those days meeting with families for Parent/Teacher conferences. It was great to check in with folks and share successes so far and clarify goals going forward. Hopefully everyone feels supported in their child’s educational journey.

We are nearing the end of our Geology unit in Field Study class. We will spend time the next week reviewing all that we have learned and preparing for our unit test next week. Students will have a list of vocabulary words to go over and review at home this weekend.

PE/Health Class

We had an unseasonably warm P.E. class yesterday. I wouldn’t mind a few more afternoons like that this month. We had fun with the hula hoops and tossing around balls with the Hi-Li equipment. Outdoor P.E. will continue as long as weather allows through December.
